Browne became known for his award-winning photograph of the monk, Thich Quang Duc, who set himself on fire in 1963. Browne passed away in New Hampshire at the age of 81.Browne was raised in New York City. As a young adult he studied chemistry at Swarthmore, a Quaker college in Pennsylvania.
