Woman dies after being hit by van in west Salt Lake City - Salt Lake Tribune

A woman has died from injuries sustained in an auto-pedestrian accident Tuesday morning in west Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Lt. Scott White said the accident was called in at 7:09 a.m. Witnesses told police that the woman, 81, had been parked in a car on the south side of 1000 North when she suddenly exited her vehicle and darted into the street and into the path of a westbound van.

"She was in extremely critical condition at the scene, no pulse," White said, confirming that the woman was declared dead at University Hospital later Tuesday morning.

White said it appeared the woman was trying to run across the street to a bus stop.

"We don't know why, if she was trying to talk to someone or get something to someone at the stop or what," White said. "She was not in a crosswalk, she appears to have just [tried to] run across the street."

The male driver was not cited, though the accident remained under investigation.

The identity of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
