6 killed, 10 hurt in overnight violence - Chicago Sun-Times

Six men are dead and at least 12 other people -- including two teens -- were wounded in violence throughout the city Friday night into Saturday.

Five of the dead were fatally shot, while a sixth was stabbed to death, authorities said.

Friday night's first fatal shooting claimed the life of a Springfield man and wounded three other men, when gunfire erupted about 6:20 p.m. in the 4200 block of South Wells Street.

Shooters emerged from a vacant lot and started firing at men on a porch. Two men were wounded but the bullets also went through the window of a building, striking two men who were sitting on a couch, killing one of them, neighbors said. William Lee Martin, 30, of Springfield, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The slaying came less than 10 minutes after another shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, in the 1100 block of West 51st Street, that wounded a 19-year-old man.

About 7 p.m. Friday, police found a man who in a vacant apartment in the South Side Chatham neighborhood who had been shot to death. Police responded to the apartment in the 8200 block of South Dobson Avenue about 7 p.m. and found the 32-year-old man unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds, Greer said. Timothy E. Kinds, of the 1100 block of East 81st Place, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

About 9:30 p.m., an Uptown neighborhood shooting killed one man and critically wounded two others. Police said the three were standing on the sidewalk in the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue when two shooters approached and opened fire. Aswell Selmon, 46, who lived in that block, was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 9:59 p.m. He was shot in the thigh, abdomen and buttocks, police said.

Another man, 32, was shot in the knee and ankle. The third man, 29, was shot in the knee, abdomen and shoulder. Their conditions had stabilized as of early Saturday, according to police.

At 11:09 p.m., gunfire from a passing light-colored sedan killed a 33-year-old man in the 6100 block of South Morgan Street in the Englewood neighborhood. Tremayne Franklin, 33, was shot in the head and died at the scene. Police think the attack may be gang-related.

The night's lone stabbing homicide happened about 12:25 a.m. in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood, in the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, police said.

Marlon L. Vaughn, 28, of the 3400 block of West Douglas Boulevard, was stabbed in the chest and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 1 a.m.

About 2:30 a.m., a 29-year-old man was found unresponsive about 2:30 a.m., shot in a vehicle in the 300 block of West 37th Street in the Armour Square neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said. Walter K. Pate, of the 13900 block of Dearborn Street in Riverdale, was dead at the scene.

Gun violence wounded at least 10 people, including a 14-year-old boy shot in the leg, and a 16-year-old girl grazed in the chest while she was standing on the sidewalk. Both are in good condition Saturday morning.

A 23-year-old man who was with a couple other poeple on a front porch in the 2900 block of North Woodard Street in the Avondale neighborhood about 9:25 p.m. when a gunman approached and fired multiple shots, striking the man in both legs, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. He was in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

About 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, a 30-year-old man was wounded in an apparent gang-related shooting in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The man was in the 1500 block of North Springfield Avenue when someone in a passing car yelled out a gang slogan and opened fire, Mirabelli said. The victim was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition, Mirabelli said.
