Chaires Elementary Honors fallen soldier Daniel Chaires

Chaires Elementary students and staff unveiled their tribute to Daniel Chaires on Thursday and hope it will be an inspiration to schoolchildren for years to come. "In 60 or 70 years, we'll all be gone but for the people who come to this school, he'll live forever," said Leon County Superintendent of Schools Jackie Pons. "For future generations of students, they'll have a real-life role model to look up to." Thursday marked the sixth anniversary of the death of Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Chaires, who was killed during combat in Iraq on Oct. 25, 2006. Chaires was the third of four local soldiers killed in the Iraq War. Chaires, 20, was a native of the Chaires community, located 12 miles east of Tallahassee, which was settled in the 1820s by his ancestors. Chaires grew up in his grandparents' 90-year-old home across the street from the elementary school, which he attended from kindergarten through fifth grade. The memorial consists of two five-foot-tall bronze figures of combat-dressed Marines, flanking a bronze rifle, helmet and empty boots, the Marine Corps symbol of fallen comrades. The memorial was paid for by Allied Veterans, a statewide group that has erected similar memorials in other cities. The monument, located at the front of the school, was unveiled in a sweet, touching ceremony Thursday morning.
