| Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal visits the Gaza strip for the first time on the 25th anniversary of Hamas. Full Story: The political leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal made his first ever trip to the Gaza strip today for the 25th anniversary of Hamas. As he greeted Palestinian officials, he kneeled down to the ground in prayer. He says being in the Gaza strip is like a third birth, the first being his real birth, and the second a failed assassination by Israel in 1997. Hamas has been labeled a terrorist organization by the US, Israel, and other western countries and Meshaal a terrorist by the United States. Meshaal was born in the West bank but left at age 11 during the Six Days War with Israel. He has lived in Kuwait, Syria and most recently Egypt and Qatar after his exile from the West Bank. Meshaal's visit is part of a ceasefire after a conflict with Israel that killed 170 Palestinians and six Israeli's. Hamas presents the battle as a victory, despite the high number of Palestinian casualties and Israeli military gains. During his visit, Meshaal visited the remains of the car in which military commander Ahmed Jabari was killed in an Israeli strike. There is speculation that Meshaal is open to talking with Palestinian Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas after over a year of silence. He told Reuters shortly before his visit that ""There is a new mood that allows us to achieve reconciliation."
