WHALES DIES

Kite surfer jumps over struggling whale, which later dies A 40-foot humpback whale that had become trapped on a sandbar in the Wadden Sea has died after a series of rescue attempts that were initiated after the mammal was discovered by a kite surfer. In fact, the kite surfer, who was videotaping his ride, jumped over the whale in what looks like a surprise encounter. He returned briefly to investigate before sailing ashore to alert authorities. That was several days ago. The Dutch News on Sunday reported that the whale perished after two failed attempts to free it from the remote sandbar. The source of one report was Lenie 't Hart, who runs the Grogingen seal sanctuary. The whale was given a lethal injection Friday and but died Saturday. Francine Giskes, mayor of the nearby island of Texel, is quoted as saying: "A healthy whale would not become stranded so there must have been something wrong with it. It is terrible to see an animal suffering before it dies and I am glad it did not take too long." It's sad news, and controversial because some believe the whale could have been saved. But at least intentions were good among those involved. The same can't be said about a 30-foot sperm whale that died Sunday of unknown causes after being discovered drifting off Florida's eastern shore. That case has become the subject of a federal probe because two swimmers were photographed next to the dying whale, and one swimmer was photographed attempting to ride the cetacean
