State recognized for increasing organ donor registration

Donate Life America presented state and organ donation officials an award last week for a campaign that has resulted in large increases in the number of organ donors in Michigan.

About 400,000 people registered to be organ donors in 2011, according to the Michigan Secretary of State's Office, which is a 25% increase over registrations in 2010. Michigan was one of four states to receive awards for greatest improvement in donor designation rate.

It ranked second in the amount of increased donors per state and the District of Columbia. According to the Secretary of State, Michigan is expected to have 500,000 registrants by the end of 2012.
