The National Organization for Marriage's war against Starbucks isn't going so well. Launched over summer for a myriad of reasons surrounding Starbucks' many pro-LGBT initiatives, NOM's "Dump Starbucks" campaign has missed its target and, arguably, caused the anti-gay group itself the most damage.
Losing the war? Then move the battleground to a locale where you have the advantage. In NOM's case, it's decided to move the battleground to the vehemently hostile-to-gays regions of the Middle East and Asia.
This is the new strategy NOM's deployed against Starbucks in what will likely amount to a test of its efforts against the numerous U.S.-based corporations that are friendly to the LGBT community.
NOM head Brian Brown revealed that the appalling new strategy is already underway in Qatar during a conference call with the American Independent.
"Their international outreach is where we can have the most effect," Brown said. "So for example, in Qatar, in the Middle East, we've begun working to make sure that there's some price to be paid for this. These are not countries that look kindly on same-sex marriage. And this is where Starbucks wants to expand, as well as India. So we have done some of this; we've got to do a lot more."
Educated Americans already know the anti-equality group lacked morality, but NOM's newest campaign sinks its reputation to a shocking new low. Putting Starbucks employees both gay and straight at risk of violence by the hands of extremists in countries more sympathetic to anti-gay demonstrations is absolutely disgusting.
Is it just me or does NOM blur the lines between itself and the Taliban (or any other Middle Eastern extremist group) more and more with every new action?
