Wednesday, Edwarda O'Bara died after spending 42 years in a coma; O'Bara was taken care of at home by her family in Miami Gardens, Florida who never gave up hope that she would someday wake up. O'Bara was 16 years old in 1970 when she went into a diabetic coma; she became sick from her medication. Her mother, Kaye said that just before she slipped into the coma she asked her to never leave her side and they didn't.
Joe and Kaye O'Bara took good care of Edwarda and read to her each day, she was turned over every two hours, and fed her through a feeding tube. Joe died in 1976 and Kaye died in 2008 and after their deaths...Edwarda's sister Colleen O'Bara took care of her.
In 2001, a book was written about the family called, "A Promise is a Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother's Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us."
A song was written about the family and it was called "My Blessed Child."
