| MaximsNewsNetwork: ( www.MaximsNews.com ) 19 July 2012 United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria: UNSMIS: Damascus, Syria - General Robert Mood, head of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) held his last press conference today (19 July) before leaving Beirut. The head of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) today asked the Security Council for "strong effective leadership" on the Syrian situation. It is now "politics" UNSMIS Major General Robert Mood told a press conference in Damascus, a day before (20 July) the expiration of the current mandate of his mission. Mood said "we are not going to be able to stop the violence". He said that 300 unarmed service men were not going to be able to impose anything. He said that once the political process started, "the tool is there, it's effective we have proof of its value." General Mood said the UN Secretary-General had recommended a presence on the ground that would be mainly politically-oriented to build on local satiability project as the best way to go forward. The UN estimates that more than 10000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Syria and tens of thousands displaced since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began some 16 months ago. The Security Council was also expected to make a decision on the future of UNSMIS, which recently suspended its regular patrols due to the escalating violence on the ground and whose 90-day mandate expires Friday.
