At least 21 Explosions Across Damascus Just Hours after After Hotel Bomb

At least 21 explosions have been heard across Damascus just hours after a bomb exploded near a hotel used by UN observers, wounding at least three people. Syrian state TV said the bomb near the Dama Rose hotel was planted on a fuel lorry. The blast was in the car park of a military compound, an AP reporter said. The hotel and a Labour Union building across the road were both damaged. The rebel Free Syrian Army said it had targeted a meeting between army officers and members of the Shabiha, a pro-government militia. None of the victims were believed to be members of the UN mission sent to Syria to monitor former special envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan aimed at ending the uprising against President Bashar al Assad's regime. State TV quoted deputy foreign minister Faisal Mekdad as saying: "This was a criminal act aimed at distorting Syria's image." The later explosions took place less than a mile from the scene of the bombing, Sky's foreign editor Tim Marshall, reporting from the Syrian capital, said. "I am guessing these are mortar rounds. I can't say for sure but they sound like mortar rounds," he added. "They are concentrated very much into one area behind the Tishreen stadium."
