Man killed in Lawndale attack, 7 others wounded across city - Chicago Tribune

A 23-year-old man was killed in the Lawndale neighborhood and seven other people were wounded in shootings across the South and Southwest sides overnight.

Dominque Green was standing on the corner in the 700 block of South Independence Boulevard about 8 p.m. Wednesday when someone approached from behind and shot him several times, police said. The shooter jumped into a waiting SUV that was later spotted northbound on Independence Boulevard.

Green was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He lived in the 1700 block of South 6th Avenue in Maywood.

In other shootings:

• A 41-year-old man was shot in the 5100 block of South Hermitage Avenue about 2:20 a.m. Thursday, police said. He was standing next to his car with a group of people, listening to music, when someone opened fire, hitting him in the arm, police said.

Rodney Beatata, 29, said he was driving down the block and found the man bleeding next to his car. He tried to pick the man up and put him in his car, but police arrived and the man was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. His condition wasn't available.

Beatata, the wounded man's blood on his white T-shirt, stood next to the crime scene, talked about the shootoing as he waited for police to cut the crime tape so he could retrieve his car.

A man who had been standing with the wounded man said he was among a handful of people listening to music when someone opened fire. He didn't see anything, he said, but police said the victim knew the person who shot him.

"I ain't trying to look ... It's some gunfire, I'm running," he said.

• A 19-year-old man was grazed in the neck while arguing with another man and drove himself to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers, where he was stable, police said. The shooting occurred in the 7600 block of South Ashland Avenue about 1:15 a.m.

• About ten minutes after midnight, two men, 23 and 27, were shot in the 5200 block of South Homan Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said. The 23-year-old man was shot in the hip and the older man was shot in the stomach.

The two were sitting on a porch when two other people approached and one of them started shooting, police said. The  attackers fled north on foot.

• About 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the ankle in the 6100 block of South Vernon Avenue in the West Woodlawn neighborhood. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center. It was not clear how the boy was shot, but police were investigating whether he may have shot himself.

• A 20-year-old man was shot about 9:10 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 66th Street in the West Englewood neighborhood. The man "heard shots and felt pain," police said. He was stable at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

• About 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 10900 block of South Loomis Street in the Morgan Park neighborhood. He was walking in the block when two men started shooting at him, police said. He went home and a relative drove him to Metro South Medical Center, police said.
