Seven Aid Workers Killed in Car Attack in Pakistan

Gunmen ambush and shoot dead six Pakistani women aid workers and a male doctor, according to police. Full Story: On Tuesday (January 1) gunmen ambushed and shot dead six Pakistani women aid workers and a male doctor in Swabi, Pakistan. Their vehicle was raked with gunfire as they returned home from work at a children's community center run by a Pakistani charity. Their driver was seriously wounded in the attack but not killed. The husband of one of the aid workers said his three-year-old son was taken out of vehicle before the aid workers were killed. [Zainul Hadi, Husband of Killed Aid Worker]: "I called her half-an-hour before her duty ended telling her that I would come and get her. Then I went to put gas in my car. While I was at the gas station, I received a phone call saying there had been a shooting on the vehicle. I rushed there to find them dead inside the vehicle. My child had been taken out of the vehicle before they shot the women." The motive for the shooting was not clear and no one at the Pakistani charity was immediately available for comment. The organization is involved in health education in underdeveloped parts of the country. It had run a school and dispensary in Swabi and helped vaccinate children against polio. A local police officer suspected the shootings might be linked to a string of attacks on polio vaccinators last month.
