Courtesy photo | California Highway PatrolSAN GABRIEL VALLEY – A 21-year-old Filipino-American was among two killed earlier this week, when the car he was riding in plunged about 100 feet off a freeway overpass.

Fil-Am Joseph Almorio and Manolo "Simon" Magat were passengers in the car and declared dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol, reported the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Another passenger, Jason Lieu, 22, suffered non-fatal head injuries while the driver of the vehicle, Christine Meng, 22, broke her arm and three vertebrae, CHP officials said. Both were taken to the Los Angeles USC Medical Center.

The SGVT reports officers administered a breathalyzer test on Meng and found she had a blood alcohol level of .11 at the time of the accident. The legal limit in California is .08 percent.

"Right now she is under arrest and she is being charged with felony DUI," said California Highway Patrol officer Doris Peniche to the SGVT. "There's a possibility she may be charged with vehicular manslaughter, maybe even murder."

No court date has been set for Meng, according to Sheriff inmate records. Meng has no criminal record, the SGTV reports.

According to reports, on Tuesday, July 31, Meng and the three male passengers had just come from a local bar in downtown Los Angeles.

Around 1am, while traveling eastbound on the 10 freeway, Meng lost control of her vehicle. The Toyota Rav4 and crashed through a guard rail, sending the car 100 feet below onto the transition road between the westbound 10 and the southbound 710 freeways.

A CalTrans worker witnessed the deadly accident and immediately notified authorities.

Joseph Almario was set to attend California State University, Fullerton in the fall. He was a member of Theta Delta Beta "Dark Boyz" Alpha Mu Class of 2009. Theta Delta Beta is the first Filipino fraternity in California.

A text message to his brother Joson Almario was not returned as of press time. A family friend, who did not want to be identified, said the fraternity hosted a vigil for Joseph and Magat at CSUF on Thursday night.
