The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died of wounds suffered Nov. 3, 2012 when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device (IED) in Paktia province, Afghanistan.
An improvised explosive device (IED), also known as a roadside bomb, is a homemade bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action. It may be constructed of conventional military explosives, such as an artillery round, attached to a detonating mechanism.
IEDs may be used in "terrorist actions or in unconventional warfare by guerrillas or commando forces in a theater of operations. In the second Iraq War, IEDs were used extensively against US-led Coalition forces and by the end of 2007 they had become responsible for approximately 63% of Coalition deaths in Iraq", according to Wikipedia (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improvised_explosive_device ).

IEDs are also used in Afghanistan by insurgent groups, and have caused over 66% of the Coalition casualties in the 2001present Afghanistan War.
Killed in the attack were:
Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, N.Y.;
Spc. Ryan P. JaynStaff Sgt. Dain T. Vennee, 22, of Campbell, N.Y.; and
Spc. Brett E. Gornewicz, 27, of Alden, N.Y.
The soldiers were assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command, Oswego, N.Y.
The mission of the 412th Theater Engineer Command is to "provide command, communications and intelligence for operational planning, supervision, and coordination of engineer brigades, groups, and other engineer units engaged in mobility, counter-mobility, survivability, topographic and general engineering missions for an Army Service Component Command or Joint Task Force.
