1 killed, 9 wounded in shootings across the city - Chicago Tribune

A Southwest Side man was killed this morning and at least nine others were wounded in shootings across Chicago Monday evening through Tuesday morning, police said.

Two other people were wounded in shoot-outs with police, authorities say.

In the fatal shooting, a 27-year-old man was shot several times around 2:30 a.m. in front of his home in the 5300 block of South Hamlin Avenue in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to police, citing early reports.

Eduardo Acosta was standing on the street when someone in a passing dark-colored sedan began yelling gang slogans, police said. Shots were fired and Acosta was hit in the neck and shoulder.

Acosta was dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police said they have made no arrests.

The slaying was the first in the West Elsdon neighborhood since May 2010.

In other overnight shootings:

• A 23-year-old man was shot in his side just after 9 p.m. Monday in the 5600 block of South Carpenter Street in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The victim was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County for treatment. Police arrested a 19-year-old reputed gang member shortly after and charges were pending against him this morning, authorities said.

• A man, 30, was walking in the 1000 block of West Hollywood Avenue in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood at about 9:45 p.m. Monday when four people approached. At least one of the men pulled a handgun and fired, striking the man in the foot, police said. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in good condition.

• Around the same time, a 41-year-old man was in a backyard in the 7200 block of South Woodlawn Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side when he heard a gunshot and realized he'd been wounded in his left ankle, police said. A friend took him to Provident Hospital of Cook County.

• A 35-year-old man was standing in the 5600 block of South Bishop Street in the Englewood neighborhood just before 10:30 p.m. when a gunman in a nearby gangway fired several shots. The victim was struck in the chest and arm and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

• Minutes later, two men, 34 and 37, were standing in the 2100 block of South Pulaski Road in the Little Village neighborhood when a gunman walked up and opened fire, police said. Both men were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were treated for gunshot wounds to their lower legs.

• A man, 22, was shot in the lower abdomen as he stood in the 2100 block of West 18th Place in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood at about 11:45 p.m., police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

• At about midnight, a 27-year-old man was shot in the right buttock and right leg as he stood in the 900 block of North Leamington Avenue in the Austin neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai.

• A 20-year-old man was struck in the right wrist as he stood with a group of people in the 6200 block of South Kimbark Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side at about 12:15 a.m., police said. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals in good condition.
