Chinese media is having a hay day with reports about the death of famous criminal Zhou Kehua. Zhou was killed in Chongqing after a gunfight with two policemen today who recognized him and began to trail him. Zhou allegedly opened fire without hitting either of the officers. He was shot in the head at 6:45 am this morning. Wanted posters with Zhou's face and rewards for his capture have been put up across China. In total, Zhou's bounty totaled 5.4 million yuan ($850000). Since 2004 Zhou has killed nine people, injured five, and stolen money all across China. Most recently he was charged with killing a woman near a bank and shooting a police officer who tried to question him. In 2005 Zhou was imprisoned in Yunan province for arms trafficking, according to state media. Personal gun ownership is banned in China. His crimes were unusual in that he often used a gun. After the shooting of the women outside a Chongqing bank, a full-scale hunt for Zhou was carried out. Authorities believed Zhou was hiding out in the mountains around Chongqing and they mobilized hundreds of forces to search for him. The hunt was futile, but state media reported finding evidence of where he lived. Speculators say that Zhou's death was meant to send a clear message to the Chinese people—that although Bo Xilai is no longer Mayor of Chonqing, the city will still take a tough stance on crime.
