MONTREAL - Thai police reportedly said two Quebec sisters found dead in a resort in June were killed from insecticide exposure, local media reported Friday.

The Phuket Wan Tourism News reported that a local police officer said it could take up to three months - "if ever" - before official results are released.

The news organization added that police had no further details on the women's mysterious deaths.

Thai media reported in June that staff on the Thai resort island of Phi Phi, in southern Thailand, found sisters Audrey, 20, and Noemi Belanger, 25, dead in a hotel room.

Thai authorities reportedly said that there were no signs of violence in the room.

However, Thai police reportedly said there was vomit on the floor and other signs the women were poisoned.

Thai medical authorities conducted preliminary autopsies on the women's bodies and the results of which were reportedly inconclusive.

The sisters' remains were transported to Quebec for a second autopsy by the province's coroner's office.

Genevieve Guilbault, spokeswoman for the Quebec coroner's office, could not confirm Friday's report by the Thai news organization.

"The investigation is not completed, so we can't confirm or deny," she said. Guilbault said the coroner should be able to publicize his findings in the "next few weeks or months."

Audrey and Noemi's father, Carl, told QMI Agency in June that the family believed the women were killed by exposure to an insecticide vapour used to kill bed bugs.

Carl also told QMI Agency that he deplored the way Thai authorities handled the case. He called Thai police work "corrupt" and "rotten."

Carl said the investigation took too long and there was little communication between Thai authorities and the family.

"(Thai) authorities said they found their bodies 12 hours after they died," Carl said. "But according to our calculations, it was 48 hours."

The Belanger family also told QMI Agency that Quebec coroner Renee Roussel told them the women's bodies were kept for five days in Thailand under conditions that were "not respectable."

The family was not able to identify the women's bodies because they were told the sight of the corpses would be too shocking, Carl said.

Audrey and Noemi were university students from the small town of Pohenegamook, about 200 km north of Quebec City.
