(KABC) -- A father was killed trying to shield his kids Three children were hurt in the incident, ages 7, 6 and 4. Another child, who was in the house at the time of the shooting, was not hurt. The kids' 28-year-old mother was also injured. The father, who was trying to protect his kids, died in surgery at an area hospital The conditions of the mother and children were not immediately released shooting was reported just before 4:30 am at a home in the 4900 block of 99th Street. That house was engulfed in flames That fire has since calmed, with firefighters on tactical alert Authorities say the suspect lives in the back house, which is the one that caught on fire.
