India Says It Has Killed 7 in Clashes Along Pakistan Border - New York Times
Indian troops and the "infiltrators" were facing off at a distance of around 600 yards, engaged in "controlled firing," Naresh Vijay Vig, a spokesman for the Indian Army, said Monday. He said five Indian soldiers had been injured.
Indian officials say the exchange of fire began two weeks ago, when the fighters were spotted in an abandoned village, Shalbhato, and prevented from advancing farther into Indian territory. Indian troops killed the seven fighters and seized a large cache of arms, including 6 AK-47s, 10 pistols, 4 grenade launchers and 4 rocket launchers, an Army spokesman said Friday.
"They have been stopped," an Army general, Bikram Singh, told reporters in New Delhi. "Some of them have been neutralized. An operation is on to flush them out." India's Defense Ministry described the episode as a "Border Action Team" maneuver, a reference to a unit of Pakistan's Army.
A Pakistani military spokesman denied any involvement.
"No such thing happened at all," the official said, in comments to the Press Trust of India. "This is a blatant lie. We totally deny this baseless allegation."
The flare-up began just as the prime ministers of Pakistan and India met in an effort to de-escalate the tensions, agreeing that senior military commanders should meet to find ways to uphold the 2003 cease-fire along the so-called line of control. It is considered a crucial step toward peace between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Though both countries are still formally observing the cease-fire, violence has risen on the border in recent months. In September, three heavily armed militants crossed the Indian border and attacked a police station and an army camp, killing 12 people before Indian troops killed them. That came after the killing of five Indian soldiers at the border and the gruesome discovery in January of the bodies of two Indian soldiers, one of whom was found beheaded. Pakistan also claims that Indian soldiers killed Pakistani troops.
The village of Shalbhato has been empty since the early 1990s, when it was the scene of fierce fighting and most of its residents moved to Pakistan, according to Indian news reports. India then built a border fence along the line of control, which skirts Shalbhato, leaving the abandoned village on the Pakistani side of the fence, though it is in Indian territory.
Hundreds Gather For Funeral Of Girl, 6, Killed Outside Moreno Valley Party - CBS Local
LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) A 6-year-old girl killed in an apparent gang-related shooting at a family party in Moreno Valley last weekend was laid to rest Saturday.
Hundreds gathered outside a Long Beach church for the memorial service of Tiana Ricks, who was shot Sept. 7 in the driveway of the home where she was attending a party with her father.
Her family called Saturday's service a 'home-going' celebration, handing out programs with photographs of Tiana to remind those present of happier times.
"She was just so sweet and so smart, and she suffered no fools," said Netta Parrish, a family friend. "Her grandfather insisted that it be a celebration, and that's what's going on."
Tyrell Ricks Jr., 26, and his daughter had just arrived at a family member's going-away party when two men pulled up in a black car, got out and came into the home's driveway.
The suspects exchanged words with someone at the get-together and then opened fire.
Tiana was struck in her shoulder. The bullet then went through her and hit her father in the leg.
Relatives said Tiana asked if her father was okay before gasping for breath and losing consciousness. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The 6-year-old's tragic death captured the hearts of the community, as well as rapper Snoop Lion, who donated to Tiana's funeral fund through his foundation "No Guns Allowed."
Rapper The Game also donated $10,000 to help pay for funeral expenses and attended Saturday's service to pay his respects.
Many others who attended the service also never met Tiana. Family and friends in attendance said the next step is justice.
"Just give us justice," said a friend. "Just turn yourself in, you know what you did. Just turn yourself in."

Mother of Man Killed in Train Crash Sued by Railway Company - ABC News
Sharon Jobson has spent the two difficult years since her son was killed in a train accident campaigning for safer train crossings in her rural Ontario town.
Last Tuesday, as she awaited their installation later this month, Jobson said she received a knock on her front door. It was the Canadian National Railway Co., the owner of the train that slammed into her son's car. It was suing her son's estate for $500,000.
"I was in shock. I couldn't believe they were doing this," Jobson said.
On July 29, 2011, John Jobson, Sharon Jobson's 22-year-old son, drove onto the seldom-used passenger railway tracks near their home and was hit and killed by a train he likely never saw coming. There were no gates or signals to alert drivers to the presence of an oncoming train.
Now gates and signals are ready for installation at the very crossing where Jobson was killed. The installation is scheduled to take place on or close to the anniversary of his death. The safety improvements came in large part from the efforts of his mother.
In the aftermath of her son's death, Jobson gathered signatures on a petition to have gates installed. She said she met with dozens of families whose loved ones had been hit and killed on the tracks where there were not adequate safety measures.
"We don't have a lot of traffic. We don't have 1,000 or 5,000 cars, like in Toronto, going over the tracks each day. We just have a few, but it seems to be people who live near the tracks who [get hit], and who came to the meeting," Jobson said. "One day a mistake is made, and there is nothing to warn them that a train is coming, like a light."
The company alleges in its complaint that John Jobson failed to heed a stop sign or take proper precautions before crossing the tracks, and that the collision caused its VIA passenger service train to derail. The railway company is seeking compensation for the costs.
Canadian National Railway declined comment because of the pending litigation.
"We just want peace," Jobson said. "We want to be alone with John. He's going to be gone two years on the 29th of July. Really, we just want to have a peaceful life, spend time alone with him."
28 elephants killed by poachers in Cameroon - Christian Science Monitor
28 elephants killed as poachers decimate Africa's elephant population. The latest 28 killed only add to the 62 percent decline in Africa's forest elephants over the last decade.

"Elephants in these two protected areas in the Congo Basin are facing a threat to their existence," said Zacharie Nzooh, WWF Cameroon representative in the East Region.
Nzooh said that between Feb. 10 and March 1, WWF found the carcasses of 23 elephants, stripped of their tusks, deep in the Nki national park. A further five were found without their tusks in the Lobeke national park, further to the east.
"The poachers used automatic weapons, such as AK-47s, reflecting the violent character of elephant poaching," he said, adding that park wardens lacked good weapons.
Smaller than its African savannah cousin, the forest elephant has straighter tusks. If urgent measures are not taken, Cameroon's forest elephants, estimated to number about 2,000, could disappear in less than a decade, Nzooh said.
Ivory sells for hundreds of dollars per kilogram on the black market. Most is smuggled to Asia, especially China, to be carved into jewellery and ornaments.
In early 2012, heavily armed poachers on horseback from Chad and Sudan massacred some 200 savannah elephants in Cameroon's Bouba Ndjida National Park.
In December, Cameroon deployed military helicopters and 600 soldiers equipped with night vision gear to try to protect the park and its wildlife. (Editing by Andrew Roche)

Nato apologises after two Afghan boys killed

He said: "The two boys were killed when our forces fired at what they thought were insurgent forces." | From: marthymamo Views: 0 0 ratings | |
