| Health lawyer: High suicide rate due to use of alcohol, veterans' problems An Author and public health Lawyer says a combination of alcohol abuse in general and alcohol and mental health problems among US war veterans in particular are major factors behind high suicide rates among Americans. "Use of alcohol in the United States is definitely a huge public health problem that is not recognized in the way that it should be. We have what I think is a national crisis of denial when it comes to people suffering from alcohol-related problems and suicides is definitely connected to alcohol use," said Michele Simon in an interview with US Desk on Wednesday. "The other major factor that we are seeing an increase in, which is problems in our military veterans -people coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan- we know have major problems with alcohol and drug abuse and also increased suicide," she added. Simon's comments come as a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health indicated that more Americans now commit suicide than die in car crashes. "Suicides are terribly undercounted; I think the problem is much worse than official data would lead us to believe," said study author Ian Rockett, a professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University. Rockett's team used data from the US National Center for Health Statistics to determine the cause of injury deaths from 2000 to 2009. | From: NoMoreilliusion Views: 0 0 ratings | |
