NHK World News ---- Unification Church founder Sun Myung Moon, known for the church's controversial mass weddings in South Korea, has died. He was 92. A Unification Church official says Moon died at a hospital in Gyeonggi Province in South Korea early on Monday morning. Born in what is now North Korea, Moon established the church in the South in 1954. The group has followers worldwide, including in Japan and the United States. The church emerged as a social problem in Japan in the 1980s because of complaints that its followers sold seals and other items for exorbitant prices. The church's mass wedding ceremonies in Seoul also attracted attention. Some Japanese TV personalities were among those who joined the events. Many relatives of followers have tried to extract their loved ones from what they regard as a cult. Moon deepened his ties with North Korea after meeting then North Korean leader Kim Il Sung in 1991. An automaker affiliated with the church is producing vehicles in the North. Sep. 3, 2012 - Updated 02:14 UTC (11:14 JST) | From: NHKReloaded Views: 1 0 ratings | |
