Two siblings who died in a bonfire explosion Saturday night in St. Clair County were killed by blunt traumatic injuries from the explosion and resulting debris, according to Dr. Daniel Spitz, the St. Clair County medical examiner.
Funeral arrangements for Savannah Blewett, 18, and her brother, Christopher Blewett, 27, were not available Monday.
Savannah Blewett was a quiet, unassuming student with a very nice smile, said St. Clair High School Principal Ronald Miller, who said he remembers seeing her at school several times every day.
Miller said counselors will be available when classes begin next month for those most affected by the tragedy.
"She was a really, really nice kid. It's a huge loss definitely for her family and our school as an extension of that," Miller said.
Savannah was planning to take part in the dental hygienist program at Baker College, Miller said, noting that she was "the kind of person you'd want working on your teeth," because of her demeanor.
Miller said Savannah's brother, Christopher, had attended St. Clair High School as well.
He described Christopher Blewett as a good guy and a character.
Savannah and Christopher, their parents' only children, were killed in what had been planned as a celebration of Savannah's high school graduation at the family's home on Gratiot Avenue in St. Clair Township.
Authorities said Christopher had splashed gasoline on the large wooden structure built for the occasion and asked his sister to light it.
The blast knocked out nearby windows and sent three other people to the hospital, one with a bad head laceration, according to St. Clair County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Campau. Their conditions were unavailable Monday.
It's unclear how many people were at the party, although Campau said sheriff's office staff interviewed 10 people after the blast.
At least one memorial page for Savannah and Christopher had been set up on Facebook as of Monday, with messages expressing a range of shock and sadness:
"Chris and Savannah, nothing will ever be the same without you guys. You both were the best cousins anyone could ask for. We all love and miss you so much! R.I.P. and take care of each other up there," wrote Megan Hoefer of Romeo.
