WALNUT CREEK -- A woman was killed and a younger woman injured Saturday night when what was believed to be a family of four walking on a Walnut Creek sidewalk was hit by a speeding pickup truck, police said.

About 6:15 p.m., witnesses said a speeding red pickup careened into the foursome as they walked near the Marriott Hotel on North Main Street, near Interstate 680. The vehicle was demolished.

An adult woman died at the scene and another younger adult woman suffered severe injuries, Walnut Creek police Lt. Lanny Edwards said. Officials were not releasing names, pending notification of family.

Police arrested Hossein Tabrizi, 53, of Walnut Creek, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. He was extricated from the truck and transported to a hospital after suffering injuries. He was later arrested at the hospital, Edwards said.

Witnesses told police that Tabrizi was driving south on North Main Street when he drove onto the sidewalk on the west side of the street, Edwards said.

Irene Wade, of Walnut Creek, was walking toward downtown on the opposite side of North Main Street when she heard the collision.

"The driver hit them so hard that the mom flew into the median and the girl flew into the parking lot," she said. "It could very easily have been me. What a terrible experience."

Walnut Creek police are advising motorists to avoid North Main Street between Penniman Way and North California Boulevard until the scene is

cleared.

About an hour after the crash, the truck, which was wedged between a signal light pole and a retaining wall, was removed from the scene.

The accident is eerily similar to the April 7 tragedy a little more than a mile away in Concord when a 17-year-old Concord boy driving an SUV struck and killed Solaiman Nuri and his 9-year-old daughter, Hadessa, while they rode bikes on the sidewalk. The pair was cycling along Treat Boulevard, along with Hadessa's sister, 12-year-old Hannah, who was injured, when prosecutors said a speeding David Rosen lost control of his vehicle and struck them.

Rosen, who is being charged as a juvenile, is expected to change his plea to guilty on felony vehicular manslaughter charges later this month, according to his attorney.
