Fourth victim dies after dramatic crash on 134 Freeway - Los Angeles Times

A fourth person died Monday after a Sunday night accident in Eagle Rock in which an SUV flew off the 134 Freeway onto a street, authorities said.

Three people were hospitalized immediately after the crash -- a man, a woman and a 6-year-old girl. The man later died of his injuries, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday.

Three people -- including the female driver and an 11-year-old girl -- were pronounced dead at the scene Sunday, authorities said. Their names were not available Monday morning because all of the victims' families had not been notified.

Investigators said the one-vehicle accident involved an 1999 Ford Expedition that was driving east in the far left lane near where the eastbound and westbound portions of the 134 are parallel bridges.

Just before 7 p.m., the vehicle hit a raised asphalt curb and rolled twice, the CHP said, falling through the space between the bridges about 35 feet onto North Figueroa Street below.

A witness told CHP officers that the driver lost control after a problem with one of the vehicle's tires.

Five of the passengers were trapped inside and were extricated by Los Angeles and Pasadena firefighters. The 6-year-old girl was thrown from the SUV before it fell off the freeway.

CHP Officer J. Knill said he was able to briefly speak with the man and the woman who died as they were pulled from the car by rescuers. But a minute or so later, firefighters were covering their bodies with blankets.

About 10 fire companies from Pasadena and Los Angeles and six rescue ambulances responded to the accident, which shut down the eastbound lanes of the freeway for more than an hour.

Investigators said two other cars on the freeway sustained minor damage from debris left by the SUV when it lost control. There were no other injuries.
