Police have named the Canterbury man who was killed in an accident at the Timaru International Motor Raceway yesterday.
Craig Hyde, 46, from Ashburton, was riding in a group near the front on the first lap when he came off his bike on the sweeping Castrol Corner at the southern end of the track.
Other competitors scattered in an attempt to avoid the fallen rider but one struck him.
There were about 30 bikes racing at the time.
Hyde died at the scene.
While police said no one else was injured in the incident that killed Hyde, a second man was taken to Timaru Hospital's emergency department from an earlier race with serious chest injuries, a St John spokesman said.
A hospital spokeswoman said he was in a stable condition and today was progressing satisfactorily.
Hyde was taking part in a Classic Action Motorcycle Sport (CAMS) event when he died.
Police said Hyde was an experienced rider who had been racing for many years.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
Motorcycling New Zealand declined to comment until the police had completed their investigation.
CAMS was formed more than 20 years ago in Christchurch by a group of racers wanting to keep the classic bikes of yesteryear on the South Island race tracks.
Their website states it is a competitive race club but its philosophy on racing is about fun, competing and presentation of its machinery.
Hyde is the second rider to die after an accident at the raceway this year.
Christchurch's Superstock rider Cameron Jones came off his motorcycle in a high speed crash on a warm-up lap in January.
He was transferred from Timaru to Christchurch in a coma but died 26 days later.
