Dallas Cowboys player killed in drunk driving accident was sober: autopsy - New York Daily News

The Dallas Cowboys player killed at the hands of his drunk-driving teammate was sober when they crashed, an autopsy revealed.

Practice-squad linebacker Jerry Brown Jr. had a blood-alcohol content of 0.056% — low enough to legally drive. Nose tackle Josh Brent, who was behind the wheel, was twice Texas' legal limit of 0.08%, police have said.

BRENT'S BLOOD-ALCOHOL CONTENT WAS TWICE LEGAL LIMIT

Neither player was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Dallas police said.

Brent, who was also arrested for a DUI in 2009, was charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter for the Dec. 8 accident and faces 20 years in prison. The 24-year-old is currently free on $100,000 bond, wearing an alcohol monitor.

The crash happened when Brent sped into a curb and lost control of the Mercedes he was driving in Irving, Texas, a Dallas suburb. The vehicle flipped at least once before crashing onto a median.

Brown was unresponsive at the scene and died later at a hospital. Brent was treated for minor injuries.

The close friends, who played football together at the University of Illinois, may have been drinking at Eddie V's restaurant in Oak Lawn, CBS Dallas reported.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is investigating who served the pair, and how much.

Brown was buried on Dec. 15 in his hometown of St. Louis. His casket was stamped with the Cowboys' logo.

Brent said he is "devastated and filled with grief," in a statement issued shortly after the crash.

"I will live with this horrific and tragic loss every day for the rest of my life," he said in the statement. "My prayers are with his family, our teammates and his friends at this time."

He described Brown as his "best friend" to reporters.

Brent wasn't booted from the team but won't play again this season.
