R&B singer Billy Scott dies at 70 - Bellingham Herald

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Billy Scott, whose "beach music" hits included "I Got the Fever" and "California," died Saturday in Charlotte, N.C., following a short battle with cancer.

He was 70 years old and leaves behind his wife, Gail.

Harry Turner, president of the Beach Music Association International, said Scott's illness came about suddenly within the last month.

At his 70th birthday on Oct. 5, Scott was in high spirits and good health, Turner said. A few days later, he complained of stomach pains that progressively got worse. He backed out of an appearance at the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Oct. 11 because of severe pains.

Scott eventually checked himself into a Charlotte hospital and tests determined he had liver and pancreatic cancer.

"It was unbelievable. I've never seen a cancer move so fast," Turner said.

He saw Scott for the last time Thursday night. Despite his deteriorating health and weight loss, Turner said his friend was in high spirits.

"He was one of the most amazing people you'll ever be around," Turner said.

Scott was originally from Huntington, W. Va., and was raised on a musical diet of rhythm and blues and soul. In his early career as a member of The Scottsmen and various incarnations of The Prophets, he was labeled an R&B singer.

But when he settled in the Carolinas over 30 years ago, he got tagged as a beach music singer. It wasn't a title he didn't initially like.

"I kind of fell into it, it was there, and all the songs we were doing were R&B and soul and then this beach music term came up in the Carolinas and it just became a part of what we were doing," Scott said in a 2000 interview. "But I didn't particularly like it until I realized this is where we were, and of course everybody would rather be a big fish in a little pond."

Diane DeVaughn Stokes, chairwoman of the Myrtle Beach Cultural Arts Advisory Committee, said Scott was recently working on a new project: working with school booster clubs to bring beach music legends to area schools.

"He believed that the only way to keep beach music thriving was to reintroduce it to the youth," she said.

Stokes and Scott recently co-hosted the second annual Beach Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Coastal Carolina University.

After the ceremony, Stokes said she got a call from Scott, thanking her for her help.

Scott, Stokes recalled, said he's a great singer but not a very good public speaker, and his co-host gave him confidence.

"It's a tremendous loss to the Myrtle Beach community," Stokes said.

River Plate X Boca Juniors Violence - 2 security Guards Assaulted 28.10.2012

Sunday's Superclasico between River Plate and Boca Juniors was rather violent, as per usual, but that didn't make it any less disturbing. There were 25 injuries, one heart attack and reports of two stewards being killed. Thankfully those reports proved to be false. As the video above shows, stewards were targeted by fans and at least one was brutally beaten by a gang of Boca Juniors fans before one man told them to stop so he could be pulled away to safety. There were 1000 police officers and another 1200 private security forces and yet it still came to this. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after Boca equalized in added time.

Killed deals raise US-China tensions

A series of similarly scuttled deals is rankling Chinese firms trying to invest in US businesses and throwing fuel on an increasingly tense trade relationship between the world's two largest economies. In a recent case involving an Oregon wind farm, US President Barack Obama rejected the deal on national-security grounds because the project was near restricted military airspace. China's Sany Group, whose affiliate Ralls Corp. pursued the wind-power project, is now suing the US President. Executives from Chinese telecommunications firms Huawei Technologies and ZTE are also fuming over a congressional report that warned US businesses against working with the two companies. Reuters, meanwhile, reports that an 18-month investigation by US authorities revealed no evidence that either company had been involved in espionage.

Emmanuelle Star Sylvia Kristel Dies at 60

At the time, Sylvia Kristel was worried about starring in the 1974 movie ''Emmanuelle,'' but consoled herself with the thought that few people would see her sexually charged performance. That thought turned out to be wrong. ''I thought, 'Oh, my goodness, this is not easy stuff,'' the Dutch actress once said in an interview. ''I was nervous, but then my boyfriend said: 'Who's going to watch this film? It will never pass censorship. It did pass the censors and went on to become a classic of the sexually liberated 1970s, propelling Ms. Kristel to international stardom. On Wednesday, she died of cancer in her sleep at age 60, her management company announced Thursday. She had been fighting cancer for several years.

Gart Westerhout dies at 85; Dutch-born astronomer helped chart Milky Way ... - Washington Post

Dr. Westerhout made the first of his achievements — principally in a field known as radio astronomy — in Holland in the years after World War II. He was among the youngest in a pioneering group of scientists taught and led at the University of Leiden by astronomer Jan Oort, who has been compared to a "modern Copernicus."

For centuries, astronomers have observed the universe with the human eye, aided by tools such as telescopes. Dr. Westerhout joined the nascent field of radio astronomy and set out to study the heavens using radio waves emitted by stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies.

He conducted his earliest research on a relic of World War II — a large radar antenna left behind by the German military and later commandeered by the Dutch scientific community. Together with his colleagues, and on increasingly sophisticated equipment, Dr. Westerhout tracked the radio waves emitted by interstellar hydrogen gas to compile the first detailed map of the spiral structure of the Milky Way.

Astronomers describe that achievement as a major advance in the field. Scientists had long suspected that the Milky Way had the spiral structure of other galaxies, said Bill Howard, aradio astronomer who today lives in McLean and first met Dr. Westerhout in Leiden. But they were too "deeply immersed within the dust and gas within in our galaxy," he said, to know for sure.

"For the first time, we could see with some precision that what appears to be a random collection of stars up there is really organized," said Kurt Riegel, who was Dr. Westerhout's first PhD student at the University of Maryland and later headed the national astronomy centers at the National Science Foundation. "The radio observations .?.?. allowed astronomers to get a handle on our own galaxy."

At the time, Dr. Westerhout had not yet turned 30.

His work attracted the attention of scientist John Toll, a future president of the University of Maryland who at the time was building the school's physics department. In 1961, Dr. Westerhout received an invitation from Toll — "out of the blue," he once recalled — to come to Maryland and create an astronomy program.

Dr. Westerhout arrived in 1962 and built a program that later became a full-fledged department with undergraduate and graduate programs. "He basically got the program going," said Stuart Vogel, the current department chair. "He was the one who hired a lot of our astronomers and made us into what we are."

"If a person gets a PhD at Maryland," Howard said, " he is very well educated in the reserach area to make major contributions to the field."

Devil Take the Hindmost - LND - Vocal Cover/Self Duet

First and foremost: Special thanks to SJComedy1 for providing the instrumental backing track to this amazing piece. She put in the time, so she definitely deserves the credit! :) I've been wanting to do a vocal cover of a musical for a while now, so I picked a piece from a musical I enjoy very much: "Devil Take the Hindmost" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies". In this cover, I sing both the parts of Erik (the Phantom of the Opera) and Raoul. I'm no Ramin or Ben Lewis, nor do I have fancy recording equipment, but I really did enjoy singing this, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as well. :)
