More than a dozen people, including elementary school children, were shot and killed at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school this morning, federal and state sources tell ABC News. State Police confirm that one shooter is dead. A second gunman is apparently at large. It's unclear how many people have been shot, but more than a dozen people including school children are dead, multiple federal and state sources tell ABC News. 3rd person dies in Calif. from mushroom poisoning - Lompoc Record

A third person has died from eating poisonous mushrooms at a California senior care facility where a caretaker found the fungus in the backyard and used it to make soup, authorities said Wednesday.

The 90-year-old man died on Saturday, state Department of Social Services spokesman Oscar Ramirez told The Associated Press. The Placer County Sheriff's Office identified him as Frank Warren Blodgett.

Ramirez said an official with Gold Age Villa in Loomis called Monday to report the third death. State officials are continuing to investigate the incident that sheriff's investigators have described as a terrible accident.

Three other people were sickened when they ate the soup made from the poisonous mushrooms on Nov. 8, including the caretaker who made it. Their conditions have not been made public.

The caretaker at the six-bed care facility did not know the mushrooms were poisonous, investigators said. The following day, those who ate the soup were ill.

Vomiting and diarrhea associated with mushroom poisoning can take 12 hours or longer to develop, which often makes it difficult to diagnose, said Dr. Kent R. Olson, medical director of the San Francisco division of the California Poison Control System.

"People don't necessarily make a connection right away," unlike food poisoning, which comes on much more quickly, Olson said.

The biggest problem with mushroom poisoning is liver toxicity. Olson said the organ stops producing normal proteins, and it eventually shuts down and dies.

"Once that happens the liver can't regenerate, so they go into a liver failure," he said. "It's quite dramatic."

Treatment includes massive amounts of IV fluids to prevent kidney failure, and activated charcoal to absorb the poison. In the past, the mortality rate was as high as 90 percent worldwide. But with the supportive care, Olson said it has declined in recent years to about 15 percent.

In Northern California, it's the season for wild chanterelle mushrooms _ a highly sought-after variety _ and for the amanita species of mushrooms that include what are known as "death cap" and "death angel" varieties.

Young poisonous North American amanitas often look like an edible version of a wild mushroom popular in Asia. Olson said they grow in large numbers in the San Francisco Bay area around Sacramento and in the Sierra foothills.

Investigators were quickly able to pinpoint the soup as the source of illnesses at the care home because the only person living there who did not eat dinner that night did not fall ill.

The two other people who died have been identified as Barbara Lopes, 86, and Teresa Olesniewicz, 73.

The California Department of Public Health periodically issues warnings about consumption of wild mushrooms, especially after someone eats a poisonous variety. The state recorded 1,700 cases of mushroom-related illnesses from 2009 to 2010, including two deaths.

State food regulations do not prohibit the use of foraged ingredients in food prepared at care facilities, though the rules do prevent the use of home-canned foods and unpasteurized milk.

Bal Thackeray: The firebrand Indian politician, dies at 86. RIP Bal Thackeray

Bal Thackeray, who died on Saturday aged 86, was a firebrand politician whose right-wing Hindu party renamed Bombay. His death leaves the western state of Maharashtra and its capital -- now known as Mumbai -- without one of its most controversial figures, who more than once expressed his admiration for the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Born on January 23, 1926 to a social activist father who played a key role in the movement to establish the Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra, 'The Tiger' as he was known began life as a political cartoonist. But he later became more involved in calling for greater rights for local Marathi-speaking people and protecting their culture and language from migrant workers. Re-naming Bombay as Mumbai in 1995, after a local deity and city landmarks, was seen as an attempt to rid the city of its British colonial past and emphasise its Marathi roots.

Mom of kids killed in Ohio murder-suicide says grandmother, uncle not in their ... - Washington Post

The children's mother, Mandy Hayes, told WTOL-TV in Toledo that her mom was her best friend and she was close to her brother.

The children, their 54-year-old grandmother Sandy Ford, and their 32-year-old uncle Andy Ford, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, a coroner ruled Wednesday in a finding that confirmed what investigators already suspected.

"I don't know what happened," Hayes said in an emotional interview. "They weren't in their right minds. That's all I can say. Something snapped, where it just — I don't know. I can't explain it, really."

Hayes' husband, Chris, drew a different conclusion.

"I think she really did not want those kids to ever come home, is what the deal was there," he said of the grandmother in the WTOL interview. "She felt that she was their mother."

Investigators and family friends say the murder-suicide appears to stem from a family disagreement over where the children should live.

For the past three years, the children ages 10, 7, and 5, lived with their grandmother. Mandy Hayes asked her mother to care for them after another son at home had behavior problems and was becoming disruptive, according to children services workers.

But within the past week, the children moved back into their parents' home, angering the grandmother who believed the youngsters would be better off with her, according to child welfare workers.

Police were called to intervene twice last week, but they said they saw no signs the children were in danger.

On Monday morning, Sandy Ford picked up the children from school not long after their mother dropped them off, and the grandmother took them back to her home, police said.

Mandy Hayes said when the school called to tell her the kids were not there, she called police.

"I figured it was my mom that had snatched them," she said. She kept calling her mom but she never answered.

Chris Hayes said he also knew the grandmother was involved once he learned the children were not at the school.

"I told my wife to keep calling the police, telling them — look, find out what car they're in, if they're going anywhere — get an Amber Alert, something," he said.

Authorities were called to the home by the children's frantic grandfather after he discovered the letters and was unable to force open the garage door.

Firefighters using a sledgehammer broke down the garage door to find the bodies of 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes, 7-year-old Logan Hayes and 10-year-old Paige Hayes slumped inside the car along with their grandmother and uncle. Two hoses attached to the exhaust of a pickup truck pumped gas fumes through the car's rear window.

A funeral for the children is set for Monday in Toledo with visitation scheduled for this weekend.

Saudi Arabia against reform in Bahrain King al-Khalifa and the US State Department may agree on a democratic reform in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia would reject the notion, an analyst told Press TV. Recently in Bahrain, protesters took to the streets to show support for the families of the scores of demonstrators killed by regime forces over the past year. They were however met with teargas and rubber bullets. Surrounding these events Saudi Arabia has agreed on purchasing billions of dollars worth of weapons from the United States to keep US protection viable. Press TV has interviewed Hisham Jaber, the Director of Middle East Studies group in Beirut, about the ongoing people's revolution and human rights situation in Bahrain. The Middle East expert expects more protests and a violent government response to the escalations over the period of Ashura. Follow our Facebook on: Follow our Twitter on: Follow our Tumblr on:

British soldier killed by gunman in Afghan uniform - The Guardian

A gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform shot and killed a member of the US-led coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan the latest in a spate of insider attacks that are fracturing the trust between Nato and Afghan forces.

Separately, officials said 11 Afghan civilians were killed by land mines on Sunday in the east and south.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the insider attack had claimed the life of a British soldier from The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland. It said the soldier was shot by an individual wearing an Afghan army uniform at his base in the Nade-e Ali district of Helmand province.

The serviceman was not named, but the MoD said his next of kin have been informed.

Mohammad Zarak, spokesman for the governor of southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, said the shooting took place in Nad Ali district after an argument between an Afghan soldier and coalition service members.

Coalition figures show at least 60 coalition service members have been killed so far this year and others have been wounded in about 45 insider attacks, where members of the Afghan security forces or insurgents dressed in their uniforms turn their guns on US and allied troops.

The insider attacks have raised questions about how effectively the allied forces can train the Afghans to take over security of their own country in 2014 and beyond. Foreign forces are due to turn over security responsibility to the local military by the end of 2014.

The spate of insider attacks has further undermined public support for the 11-year war in Nato countries and increased calls for earlier withdrawals.

In London, General David Richards, head of Britain's armed forces, described the insider attacks as a "very effective" Taliban tactic.

"They're very good at playing on our minds because of the impact it has in the minds of (ordinary people) and many people who are of influence, including our politicians," Richard said.

Meanwhile, roadside bomb killed three men, two women and a baby in Khost province of eastern Afghanistan, deputy provincial police chief Youqib Khan said. He said their vehicle hit the bomb as they were returning from a hospital.

Three other civilians were killed when their vehicle detonated a land mine on the road between Helmand and Kandahar provinces, a government statement said.

Also in the south, two civilians who were walking were killed by a land mine in Khakrez district of Kandahar province, said Ahmad Jawed Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

The United Nations says homemade bombs continue to be the weapons that kill the most civilians in the war.

Cabdriver killed in pileup on I-494 - Minneapolis Star Tribune

A Minneapolis cabdriver was killed early Monday when an unlicensed motorist ran out of gas in his minivan on a southwest metro interstate, triggering a multi-vehicle pileup, authorities said.

The crash, which involved a tanker truck and six other vehicles, occurred shortly after 5 a.m. on westbound Interstate 494 near France Avenue and clogged the freeway through rush hour, according to the State Patrol.

The sequence of events began when a minivan driven by Isidoro Corona, 49, of Minneapolis, ran out of gas in the right lane and came to a stop causing three other vehicles in that lane to crash, the patrol said. There was no shoulder on the road at the crash scene because of road work barriers.

A cab driven by Nadir Ombabi, 57, of Burnsville, slowed down near the scene, swerved into the middle lane, sideswiped another vehicle and then was struck in the driver's side door by a large truck driven by Bruce Hanson, 48, of Onamia, Minn.

Ombabi was killed, and David Paul, 64, of Minneapolis, whose SUV hit Ombabi's cab from behind, was injured.

"In Bloomington, there is probably a gas station every block or two," said patrol Lt. Eric Roeske. "There really is no reason to run out of gas."

The freeway was closed until about 9:15 a.m. as a reconstruction team investigated, Roeske said.

Gamal Eshmawy, who employed Ombabi at Northstar Taxi for the past five years, described his cabbie as "a very, very good driver."

Ombabi was heading to Edina to pick up someone who needed a ride to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and "I don't know what happened after that," Eshmawy said. Ombabi's death was the first driver fatality for his company -- either traffic- or crime-related -- since Eshmawy started the business in 1980, he said.

He said Ombabi studied medicine in his native Sudan and has a sister in Canada and a brother in California.

"He was very, very polite, a very nice person," Eshmawy said. "It's really, really sad."

Corona was driving on a revoked license and was booked into the Hennepin County jail, Roeske said.

A federal immigration official spoke to him briefly after he was booked and an "immigration detainer" was placed on him, meaning federal authorities intend to talk to him further, said Shawn Neudauer, spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the Twin Cities.

Court records show Corona has been cited at least seven times in Minnesota for driving without a valid license since 2005, along with other traffic violations.

Roeske said the patrol typically doesn't jail someone for driving on a revoked license, but added that Corona was jailed in this case "primarily due to his record and lack of proper ID."

"We wanted him booked to establish positive ID in case he is charged with a more serious crime," he said.
