 | The scene of the attack on the M1 motorway, Northern Ireland officer killed on motorway A prison officer shot dead on a motorway in Northern Ireland has been named as David Black by Justice Minister David Ford. The officer was ambushed on a stretch of the M1 between Portadown and Lurgan, County Armagh, on his way to work at the high security Maghaberry Prison near Lisburn. The long-serving officer from Cookstown, County Tyrone, had more than 30 years' service in the Prison Service and was approaching retirement. The big launch of Microsoft's Surface got off to a rocky start in Beijing after an elderly woman invaded the stage in an attempt to halt proceedings. "The British and Irish Governments, the Executive, the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) and Garda - and above all the people of Northern Ireland - will continue to work together to ensure that those who pursue their aims by violence will not succeed." The shooting represents a major blow for recently-appointed director general Sue McAllister who took over the reins of the organisation earlier this summer. Three killed as Syrian Eid ceasefire broken
 | The first day of the UN-brokered Eid ceasefire has been broken already, with reports that three people have been killed by tank fire in the Syrian capital Damascus. The four day truce was supported by both sides initially although President Bashar al-Assad said he would respond to any attacks, and rebel forces were sceptical of the Syrian leader sticking to the deal. Omar Shawaf from the Syrian National Council explained his scepticism "We don't believe as Syrian opposition that Bashar Assad will be adhering with this truce and it shows itself today because till now 17 civilians was (were) killed in Syria within the last six hours." As images were broadcast earlier on Syrian TV which showed Assad attending Friday prayers, a Free Syrian Army commander demanded that President Bashar al-Assad freed detainees. And UN aid agencies that had geared up to take advantage of any window of opportunity provided by a ceasefire to go to areas that have been difficult to reach with aid and supplies will now have to rethink their strategy.  | Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, have pardoned an axe murderer convicted of killing an Armenian army officer. The decision was met with unease across the border. But a month later when Ramil Safarov returned to Azerbaijan to a hero's welcome, long standing tensions between two countries have flared anew. Azerbaijan and Armenia have been fierce rivals since a war in 1988 over the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh. The region's parliament had voted to join Armenia and Armenia-backed separatists took control of Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan. About 30000 people were killed and a million, mostly Azerbaijanis, were driven from their homes. Russia brokered a ceasefire in 1994 that left Nagorno Karabakh in Armenian hands.
