Sunday, Walmart responded to an alleged shoplifter who died at a Walmart store early Sunday morning; two Walmart employees have been suspended and one contract security guard was fired after a man died at a Walmart store in Lithonia, Georgia.
Police reported that the man was non-responsive them after he was in a "physical altercation" with store employees.
WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News reported that at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning the alleged shoplifter left the Walmart store with two DVD players. A security guard and two Walmart employees stopped the man in the parking lot.
The police were called and found the two employees on top of the alleged shoplifter, and police found the man unresponsive and blood was coming out of his nose and mouth.
The police report stated that the security guard held the alleged shoplifter in a chokehold. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Cause of death has not been released.
Sunday, Walmart released a statement from spokeswoman Dianna Gee stating that the security guard no longer works there, and the two employees have been suspended without pay upon further investigation.
Gee said:
This is truly a sad situation. We don't know all of the facts right now. We're in the process of working with law enforcement to determine all of the facts and cooperating and providing any information we have to assist in the investigation.
