Brutally burned in August, young mom Megan Kimbrough dies from infection - New York Daily News

A young mother whose husband is charged with setting her on fire back in August died Saturday from an infection antibiotics simply couldn't battle.

Megan Kimbrough of Lakeland, Fla., passed away at Tampa General Hospital with her mother at her side, The Ledger reported.

"I feel Meg all around me, whispering do not be sad God gave me a do over," the 26-year-old's mother wrote in a Facebook post Sunday.

"I witnessed a miracle the last 3 months, I watched a young woman grow close to God. We will cry for our loss but rejoice for her victory!"

Kimbrough suffered burns to 80 percent of her body after her husband, Joshua Kimbrough, allegedly doused her in fuel and burned her alive on Aug. 3.

Megan Kimbrough ran out into the street, where neighbors desperately tried to put out the flames by covering her in towels.

She was airlifted to the hospital's burn unit. Doctors in the emergency room initially feared that she wouldn't survive, ABC Action News reported.

Kimbrough underwent 12 skin graft surgeries to repair the damage before contracting the deadly infection in late October.

Joshua Kimbrough remains in a local county jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, arson, and aggravated assault with a firearm, among others.

His parents, Rita and David Sanders, claim their son was high on heroin when he brutally attacked his wife.

The 32-year-old went on a crime spree shortly after the assault, in which he stole a car at gunpoint, robbed a home and then used a stolen credit card at a local gas station, according to authorities.

Assistant state attorney Chip Thulberry told the Ledger that the charges against Kimbrough may be upped to first-degree murder now that his wife has died.

Aubrey Mabry, a burn survivor who often visited Megan Kimbrough while she was in the hospital, honored her friend in a Facebook post Sunday.

"The last time I saw Megan awake I spoke with her about how many lives she had touched and how many more she was going to," Mabry wrote. "Megan has made a difference and will continue to through all of us."

Services for Kimbrough will be held at a funeral home in Scottsburg, Ind., on Dec. 1.
