Fishing guide dies after snowmobile breaks through Lake Superior ice - Duluth News Tribune

A well-known fishing guide died Saturday afternoon after his snowmobile went through the ice on Lake Superior offshore from Bayfield.

James "Jim" Hudson, 34, of Bayfield, broke through the ice in the channel between Long Island and the mainland, the Ashland County Sheriff's Office reported.

Authorities received a call of a person in the water shortly after 1:07 p.m. Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that a bystander may have tried to pull Hudson from the water, but kept falling through the ice and was unable to do so.

Rescue crews, including the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to the scene. About 1:38 p.m., rescuers from the La Pointe Volunteer Fire Department and the Madeline Island wind sled reported that they had pulled Hudson from the lake.

Hudson was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland and then airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ashland County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Hudson, a former police officer, was a native of the Bayfield area. He ran Hudson's On the Spot Guide Service, guiding anglers year-round, with an emphasis on the Lake Superior waters of Chequamgeon Bay and the Apostle Islands.

Hudson's wife, photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, garnered worldwide attention last summer for a photo she took of local resident John Unger and his elderly dog, Schoep, resting in the waters of Lake Superior on a summer day.

In a profile posted at fishingworld.com, Jim Hudson said he learned about fishing from his grandfather, who was a commercial fisherman in the area.

News of Hudson's death prompted an outpouring of condolences for his family from fellow anglers on social media. The North American Ice Fishing Circuit tweeted, "Our industry lost a great man today. Our thoughts & prayers go out to the family & friends of Jim Hudson. You will be missed by many."
