WALNUT CREEK -- A woman was killed and a younger woman injured Saturday night when a pickup truck ran off the road and collided with them, police said.

The tragedy unfolded about 6:15 p.m. when the truck careened into a foursome as they walked near the Marriott Hotel on North Main Street and Parkside Drive, near Interstate 680, Walnut Creek police Lt. Lanny Edwards said. The younger woman was taken to an undisclosed hospital and police did not update her condition. Police and witnesses said the younger woman suffered severe injuries.

Police identified the driver as 53-year-old Walnut Creek resident Hossein Tabrizi. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter at a hospital where he was being treated for his injuries after being extricated from the demolished truck, Edwards said.

Witnesses told police that Tabrizi was driving south on North Main Street when he drove onto the sidewalk on the west side of the street, Edwards said. The truck slammed into a street light pole and a retaining wall in front of the hotel and became wedged.

The adult woman died at the scene after being sent flying several feet into a median in the center of the street. Police did not release her name pending notification of family members.

Irene Wade, of Walnut Creek, was walking toward downtown on the same side of North Main Street as the wreck but was a few feet ahead of it when she heard the collision.

"The driver hit them so hard that

the mom flew into the median and the girl flew into the parking lot," she said. "It could very easily have been me. What a terrible experience."

North Main Street between Penniman Way and North California Boulevard were closed for close to four hours while police investigated.

About an hour after the crash, the truck was removed from the scene.

The accident was eerily similar to the April 7 tragedy a little more than a mile away in Concord where police said a 17-year-old Concord boy driving an SUV struck and killed Solaiman Nuri and his 9-year-old daughter, Hadessa, while they rode bikes on the sidewalk. The pair was cycling along Treat Boulevard, along with Hadessa's sister, 12-year-old Hannah, who was injured, when prosecutors said a speeding David Rosen lost control of his vehicle and struck them.

Rosen, who is being charged as a juvenile, is expected to change his plea to guilty on felony vehicular manslaughter charges later this month, according to his attorney.
