Lousianna Tech's mascot, an adorable English bull dog named Tech XX, died after an employee at Sexton Animal Health Center left him outside.
The employee let the dog outside Sunday so he could go to the bathroom but forgot to bring him back inside, according to Patrick Sexton, the veterinarian who owns the facility.
Tempuratures in Ruston, La., that day soared to a blistering 102 degrees and Tech XX apparently died of a heat stroke.
Sexton said that the worker tried to cover up the dog's death, misleading people into believing he had gone missing.
"That employee unfortunately chose to handle it the wrong way and attempted to cover it up," Sexton said in a statement released by the university. "Due to this negligence, the employee is no longer employed by Sexton Animal Health Center."
Sexton cared for Tech XX since he became the mascot of the university in 2008. He even issued a $2,000 reward for the safe return of the 4-year-old pup before he realized his fate, according to Yahoo!.
"My family, my staff and I are extremely upset at this tragic turn of events as I know the entire Louisiana Tech Family is as well," Sexton said.
Louisiana Tech released a statement expressing its disappointment.
"Louisiana Tech University was saddened to learn of Tech XX's passing this past Sunday evening. He will be remembered for being a fan favorite and a symbol of the spirit of Louisiana Tech.
"Since becoming our official mascot in 2008, Tech XX received superior care and a loving home from Dr. Patrick Sexton and, despite the unfortunate circumstances of the past few days, we are grateful for all he and his family have done for our beloved mascot.
"Tech XX was a cherished member of the Louisiana Tech Family and, together, we will all grieve his passing."
