Broward Sheriff's Office deputy dies from crash injuries

A Broward sheriff's deputy who was critically injured in a Sept. 11 crash off Interstate 95 has died, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputy Daniel Rivera, 32, was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. Saturday at Broward Health North hospital, according to sheriff's spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.

Rivera's family is "grateful for the outpouring of support during this difficult time," Coleman-Wright said in an emailed statement. "We ask that you continue to pray for Rivera's family and his BSO family."

The day of the crash, the 10-year veteran was headed to work at BSO's Pompano Beach district office.

Rivera had intended to exit from southbound I-95 onto Atlantic Boulevard amid wet roadway conditions, when the crash happened south of Copans Road, officials said.

Accident investigators suspect that the deputy began applying the brakes, lost control of his vehicle and went off the road, causing his vehicle to hit a tree, Sheriff Scott Israel said the day of the crash.

Rivera started with the Broward Sheriff's Office in 2003. He served most of his 10 years with the agency as a Department of Detention deputy. He transferred to the Department of Law Enforcement in May 2012. He was assigned to the Pompano Beach district office as a road patrol deputy.

Funeral arrangements are pending, Coleman-Wright said.
