Cops: School security guard dies after being injured breaking up fight - Chicago Tribune

A security guard at a south suburban high school died after falling against a locker while trying to break up a fight at the school, police said.

Paramedics responded to Thornwood High School, 17101 S. Park Ave., in South Holland, early this afternoon to treat an unconscious security guard, and the guard, a 54-year-old man, was declared dead at 1:33 p.m. after being taken to Ingalls Hospital in Harvey, according to a police news release.

The guard was identified as Richard Cowser, of the 1000 block of East 173rd Street in South Holland, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Initial police investigation found two security officers had been sent to deal with a fight between two female students in a school hallway, according to the release. While the officers were trying break up the fight, the 54-year-old man fell against a locker and was hurt.

The guard had trouble breathing after he was hurt, and paramedics were called, according to the release.

The students involved and other witnesses were being interviewed by South Holland police. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
