Anthony Sedlak Celebrity Chef Dies at Age 29

Vancouver's homegrown celebrity chef, Anthony Sedlak, made a meaningful connection with everyone he met. "There was something about him that was very different ... he understood everybody, he joked around with everybody," said Augustine Akugbe, an employee at Sedlak's American Cheesesteak Co. on Davie Street. "When he (walked) in everyone (knew) Anthony was there. His energy was surrounding everybody." The promising chef died suddenly from an undiagnosed medical condition, according to a statement issued by his family. He was 29. His body was found in his North Vancouver apartment on Friday around 7 pm When Sedlak was 23, he won the Food Network's Superstar Chef Challenge, and went on to become the host of the Food Network's The Main and Family Cook Off. He opened The American Cheesesteak Co. (ACSC) in Vancouver earlier this year. Sedlak visited the restaurant often — sometimes just to stop in and chat. "He was really fun -- he was more like a kid in an adult's skin," said Akugbe. Akugbe said he'll always remember his catchphrase: "A cheeseteak, is a cheesesteak, is a cheesesteak." Sedlak's consistency in everything he did and his strive for perfection motivated Akugbe's passion for culinary arts. "The fries we have here — he (made) me put more time into it — I perfected those fries," he said.
