Dozens of schoolchildren in Gaza will not return to class because they died in recent rocket shelling by the Israeli military. A school desk is all that remains of Yara Ad-Dalu, a ten-year-old pupil who died when an Israeli rocket destroyed her house and killed all her family. "Yara was one of my best friends. She was even like a sister to me. She was always merry, never sad", says Zahwa Alladaa. "We ask ten-year pupils -- there are four classes of them -- to mourn Yara, because she deserves to be remembered, deserves these tears", says a teacher. The girl's body was found under the debris of the destroyed house. "According to initial statistics, 20 pupils have died in primary and secondary schools and the same number in kindergartens", says West Gaza education head Mahmoud Nofel. Many houses were targeted during the shelling, dozens of them were destroyed and dozens of children's lives were brought to a premature end. "Civilian houses were the aim of the Israeli occupiers. They don't make a distinction between men, women and children. Everyone was the target of this cruel, fierce war", says a girl.
