Four people have been killed and another seriously injured in a crash between Ohakune and National Park in the central North Island overnight.
A vehicle with five occupants collided with a logging truck travelling in the opposite direction on State Highway 4, near Erua, around 10pm last night.
The fifth occupant of the vehicle was taken to Taumarunui Hospital in a serious condition.
The truck driver involved received minor injuries.
It appears the group may have been either heading for or returning from a camping trip.
Police said initial reports that a 3-year-old was among those dead cannot be substantiated due to the condition of the wreckage.
They said it may take some time before the identity of the occupants of the vehicle can be confirmed.
The road in both directions was closed overnight while emergency services worked at the scene to release the occupants of the vehicle.
