2012-09-12 News Watch Video - Casey K-9 Officer Dies

The community of Casey is remembering their K-9 officer Nitro. He joined the department in 2002 when he was just 16 months old and was a part of it for more than ten years. The 12-year old German Shepherd was put down on Saturday. He suffered from hip dysplasia and low blood sugar. Nitro's handler, Lieutenant Brent Clapp of the Casey Police Department, took in the dog after he was retired as the K-9 officer in 2011. Clapp says Nitro wasn't like any other, and was a special part of the police department. Not only does the loss affect the police department, but the entire community. Casey resident Lois Ashley saw a lot of Nitro. She lives next to the police department, and will miss greeting the canine at her back door. A new police dog was purchased right after Nitro's retirement. His name is Paladin and he is Clapp's new partner in crime.
