NHK - South Korea to preserve Yeonpyeong Island ruins

NHK World News ---- South Korea says it will preserve the ruins of bomb sites from the North's 2010 shelling of Yeonpyeong Island. The government says that it wants to keep a record of the attack. Four South Koreans were killed, including 2 civilians, in the shelling of the Yellow Sea island. About 40 houses were destroyed. The government said it will permanently preserve 3 houses directly hit by the shelling. A commemorative museum will be built nearby. Since the attack, the South Korean military has beefed up its presence on the island. New emergency shelters have been built in the center of the island. The government has paid for the repair of damaged houses and built new ones for those who lost their homes. Most of the residents who evacuated during the shelling have returned. But many residents express fear of further attacks from North Korea. One said it is frightening to imagine a repeat of what the North did 2 years ago. Aug. 29, 2012 - Updated 20:06 UTC (05:06 JST)
