Former Hilltoppers basketball player Stephen Harrell Cunningham died Oct. 1 at his home in Alba, Texas, at age 68.
Cunningham, a 6-foot-5-inch center, was a key member of two Hilltopper basketball teams in the mid-1960s. The two teams for which he started combined to win 43 of 55 games, going 18-9 his junior season, taking runner-up honors in the Ohio Valley Conference and making an appearance in the NIT in Madison Square Garden, where the Tops defeated Fordham before losing to Army. Cunningham was second on the team in scoring (13.9 ppg) behind sophomore Clem Haskins.
