Man Gets 1 to 5 Years in Pa. Crash That Killed 5

Families of five people killed in a vehicle crash near East Petersburg two years ago gathered in the courtroom seeking justice. Friends of 66-year-old Alfred Moore, who admitted that he caused the crash, asked for forgiveness and mercy. "It's my job to try to find the right balance," Lancaster County Judge Louis Farina said Wednesday during Moore's sentencing. "I have been a judge for a long time. This is one of the hardest sentences I've ever had because you are such a good man," Farina said to Moore, before turning to the victims' family members, "and they have suffered such loss." Farina sentenced Moore, a diabetic, to 1 to 5 years in the state prison at Laurel Highlands, where he will received dialysis treatment for his failing kidneys. Farina also placed Moore on probation for two years upon his release from prison and ordered him to pay restitution of more than $250000. "I can't get away from the fact that five people died and one was horribly injured," Farina said near the end of the two-hour hearing. Moore, now living in Philadelphia, will report to prison on Nov. 7. The former taxi driver pleaded guilty this summer to crashing into a pack of motorcyclists who were traveling on Route 72 on June 27, 2010. Moore skipped lunch that day, even though he knew he had to eat regular meals to keep his diabetes in check, according to testimony.
