One man dies after boating collision in Puget Sound

A 76-year-old man died after a yacht and fishing boat collided off the coast of Ballard this afternoon, according to the Seattle Police Department. A 44-foot yacht called The Shelmar collided with an aluminum skiff, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Police say two men were ejected from the 16-foot vessel in the collision, which happened about a mile from shore. Occupants of the yacht rescued the men from the water while a nearby Squamish Tribal Police boat arrived to help.

When medics arrived around 4:30 p.m. at 7001 Seaview Ave. NW, they found two men on the shore, according to Seattle Fire spokesman Kyle Moore. Efforts to resuscitate one man were unsuccessful and another man in his 70s was sent in stable condition to Harborview Medical Center, Moore said.

The U.S. Coast Guard found the skiff overturned near Port Madison and are searching nearby waters for any possible pollution resulting from the collision, said U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Shawn Eggert. Both boats were brought back to the Shilshole Bay Marina in Ballard.

No signs of impairment were observed in the man operating the yacht at the time of the collision, according to Seattle Police.

The Seattle Police Department and U.S. Coast Guard are investigating.

An earlier version of this post cited a Seattle Fire report that the collision victim was in his 60s.
