Fog likely causes Kazakhstan plane crash, 21 killed

A Kazakhstan plane on Tuesday has crashed near commercial capital Almaty, killing all 21 people on board. The aircraft, owned by the private Kazakh airline SCAT, was en route from the northern city of Kokshetau to Almaty. It crashed one and a half kilometers from Almaty's main airport and broke into pieces when it hit the ground. State news agency Kazinform quoted an emergency official at the crash site as saying that the plane was initially denied permission to land by the airport due to poor visibility. The plane then made a second approach, but lost its bearings and crashed a few kilometers from the airport. SCAT says the cause for the crash will not be determined until flight recorder data is examined. It is the second fatal plane crash in Kazakhstan within just over a month.
