| A sperm whale, freed by Indonesian rescue workers after becoming beached in West Java, has died. After being trapped for four days, Indonesian rescue workers, including navy personnel, pulled the 2-ton mammal to deeper waters on Saturday. Locals had paid fishermen to take rides out to the stranded whale, hampering some rescue efforts. On sunday evening, fishermen found the whale off the beach in Muara Gembong, and a Jakarta Animal Aid Network rescuer told the AFP that they confirmed it was the same 36-foot whale. The rescuer suspected that the whale was too weak and hungry to withstand ocean currents. Sperm whales are the largest toothed animal, growing up to some 60 feet in length and up to 45 tons.
