French Hostage Killed In Somalia

French agent held hostage in Somalia is killed. Full Story: Somali militants linked to al Qaeda said on Thursday they had executed Denis Allex, a French intelligence officer who armed forces had tried to rescue at the weekend. But France maintains that Allex was killed in Saturday's botched rescue mission, and accuse the militants of attempting to manipulate the media. Two French commandos were also killed in the failed raid, which coincided with the launch of French air strikes against Islamist militants in the West African country of Mali. This footage shows Allex reading from a statement whilst in captivity, and is dated back to July 2012. The al Shabaab rebel group said on Twitter that the French agent, held hostage since 2009, was killed on Wednesday. The al Shabaab spokesman for military operations told Reuters by telephone: "Let Muslims enjoy his execution and the French cry." The militants say the decision to kill Allex was unanimous, and followed three years of failed negotiations. Allex was one of two French intelligence officers kidnapped by al Shabaab in Mogadishu in July 2009. The other, Marc Aubriere, escaped one month later.
