405 Freeway Construction Worker Killed / West Los Angeles RAW FOOTAGE

Written by City News Service - A man working on a construction project on the San Diego (405) Freeway in West Los Angeles was killed today when a 3000-pound steel beam being lifted off a truck fell on him. The victim was identified as 42-year-old Adolfo Figueroa, who died about 3 am at the scene in the 11200 block of West Santa Monica Boulevard -- just east of Sawtelle Boulevard, near the southbound 405 -- according to police and fire officials. Cal-OSHA was summoned to the work site to investigate the fatality. Crisis counselors were dispatched to the scene to assist the victim's distraught colleagues, including one who, according to a California Highway Patrol officer at the scene, tried to lift the beam off Figueroa, an employee of a contractor working on the 405 carpool-lane project through the Sepulveda Pass. Kiewit Corp. issued a statement saying, ``We were deeply saddened to learn that early this morning one of our employees, Adolfo Figueroa, died while performing work on the I-405. The safety of those who work on our projects and the traveling public is our most fundamental value and top priority. ``Kiewit is conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and working closely with Cal-OSHA, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and other state and local authorities to determine the factors contributing to this tragic event.''
