Himalayas avalanche sweeps away climbers in Nepal, killing at least nine with another four missing. An avalanche swept away climbers and their camps in Nepal on Sunday. At least nine climbers have been killed, with another four missing, report local police. The avalanche struck on Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain. The bodies of a German climber and a Nepali guide have been recovered from the snow. [Captain Pasang, Mountain Air Organization]: "The avalanche that came this morning at 4am from Camp 4 of Manaslu Himal buried the people at Camp 3." Five climbers were rescued by helicopters and flown to Kathmandu. [Captain Pasang, Mountain Air Organization]: "As soon as we came to know about the accident we mobilized one of our helicopters, we brought three French and one German national to the hospital." The accident took place at more than 20000 feet, making it hard for land rescue teams to reach. Rescue helicopters were impeded by cloud and fog. The nationality of the missing climbers is not yet known. Nepal is a popular climbing destination, with eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. The last major accident took place in 1995, when heavy snowfall in the Mount Everest region killed 42 people.
